OpenUptime

Uptime alerts with ntfy push

Publish alerts to an ntfy topic, on ntfy.sh or your own server, and get them as push notifications wherever you subscribe.

Set it up

  1. Install the ntfy app on your phone or desktop and subscribe to a topic with a name that is hard to guess.
  2. In OpenUptime, open Alerting, choose Add channel and pick ntfy.
  3. Enter the server (https://ntfy.sh by default) and the topic, plus an access token if the topic is protected. Pick a priority from 1 to 5.
  4. Save, then press Test: a test message arrives within seconds, and the delivery log below the channels shows whether it went through.

Good to know about ntfy

  • Topics on ntfy.sh are public to anyone who knows the name. Use a long random name, or a protected topic with an access token.
  • Messages are kept under ntfy's 4,096-byte limit so they arrive as text, not as an attachment.
  • A self-hosted server must be reachable on a public address.

On every channel

  • Every channel is available on every plan, Free included.
  • Choose per monitor which channels it alerts, or turn a channel on for every new monitor.
  • Until someone acknowledges an incident, it can repeat on the mobile app (up to 10 times, by email too if you choose) and escalate to other channels in up to 3 levels.
  • A failed delivery is retried, and the delivery log shows what was sent to which channel and why anything failed.

Add a monitor, connect the channel and press Test. The Free plan includes every alert channel.

Questions

What does the priority change?

ntfy maps 1 to 5 from min to max. Priority 4 and 5 can make a sound and vibrate even when the app would otherwise stay quiet, depending on your phone's settings.

How is this different from the OpenUptime mobile app?

The app reaches every workspace member who installed it, and it is where repeat reminders go. ntfy suits people who already use it, or Android users without the iOS app.
