Website down email alerts
Send an email to a person or an on-call alias when a monitor goes down, with the error and start time, and another with the downtime once it recovers.
Set it up
- In OpenUptime, open Alerting, choose Add channel and pick Email.
- Enter the address, such as oncall@example.com. A group alias reaches everyone on it.
- Save, then press Test: a test message arrives within seconds, and the delivery log below the channels shows whether it went through.
What arrives
🔴 Checkout API is down — Expected 200, got 503
✅ Checkout API has recovered
Good to know about Email
- Down emails list the monitor, its target, when the incident started and the error; recovery emails add how long it was down.
- Emails are written in the recipient's language when they have an OpenUptime account, otherwise in the workspace's.
- Alert emails and status page subscriber emails share a monthly allowance: 100 on Free, 2,000 on Lite, 15,000 on Starter and 60,000 on Team. Past it, only email pauses; every other channel keeps sending.
On every channel
- Every channel is available on every plan, Free included.
- Choose per monitor which channels it alerts, or turn a channel on for every new monitor.
- Until someone acknowledges an incident, it can repeat on the mobile app (up to 10 times, by email too if you choose) and escalate to other channels in up to 3 levels.
- A failed delivery is retried, and the delivery log shows what was sent to which channel and why anything failed.
Get Email alerts
Add a monitor, connect the channel and press Test. The Free plan includes every alert channel.
Questions
Why did an alert email not arrive?
Check the delivery log under Alerting: it shows whether each email was sent, failed or skipped because the allowance was used up. Then check the spam folder and add the sender to your contacts.
Do repeated reminders go by email?
Only if you turn on Repeat by email too. Repeats always go to the mobile app, and escalation levels go to the channels you pick for them.
